Teacher Resource Links

Hey teachers! Here are some links I found that are neat that help incorporate math and technology!

The Cornerstone
I LOVE this website not only for math but for other subjects and classroom management tips! This particular link gives ideas for math game routines, math center ideas, math journals, math manipulatives, math vocabulary and word walls, etc.

Houghton and Mifflin
Even though we do not use this particular textbook in our classroom, this website allows you to pick from multiple math subjects to find extra support for teaching your students and even sample newsletters to send home to parents. It also has a translator for the newsletter for non-English speaking parents! This particular link is for second grade but going back to the homepage allows you to pick any grade.

Math in Daily Life
I posted a link similar to this one in one of my other entries but this link attends to more mature mathematical subjects like credit, savings, using geometry for home decorating, etc. Teachers may use this link in a variety of subjects besides math class because it appeals to daily life!

Dan Meyer
This link is actually a document on Google Docs created by a teacher named Dan Meyer! He lists the standard(s) that the activity is aligned to and even posts guiding questions. Click on some of the 'Task Titles' to explore some of these activities!

Mathmaticious YouTube Video
This video is of a boy singing about his love of mathematics! It is not only hilarious but teachers may encourage students to make their own videos to help a concept of mathematics really stick. I would love to see my students make up rhymes about addition or subtraction within 20. I would have them first create a poem and then record them! Enjoy!

Math Videos

I would use this video as an bell ringer or exit slip during an unit over Measurement and Data in the 2nd grade!

I would use this video to introduce multiplying by zero in the 2nd or 3rd grade!

Measurement and Data Wordle

I created this Wordle here. Feel free to create your own!

Cool Math

Cool Math is an interactive website that allows students and parents/guardians to review lessons over mathematical topics. As you scroll down farther on the page, Cool Math has games to also help review topics! This site is colorful and kid-friendly as can be. It can be helpful during school or at home as it has other links specifically for parents/guardians.

This site will also be available during our center rotations. I like students to stay engaged during this time so I will frequently switch up websites on the computers. I will, once again, play any math games first to make sure they are appropriate and educational. If a certain game aligns to the standard we are covering, I will make sure that students play this game first before moving on to any other games.

Cool Math is found here.

Yummy Math

Yummy Math is a website designed for the purpose of sharing mathematics problems and scenarios based on things happening in the world today. For example, the activity for December 4th was based on Lebron James's return to Cleveland. I've decided to use this website for our class because it talks about various things such as NFL and NBA teams, the size of pumpkins grown on local farms, Columbus (incorporating history into mathematics), TV sizes, etc. The creators, two mathematics teachers, Brian Marks and Leslie Lewis, developed Yummy Math and welcome suggestions from other mathematics teachers and parents/guardians.

I plan on using this site during our morning bell ringers. After getting to know many of the students interests, I hope to engage them by picking topics to use that interest them! Students will really be able to see how mathematics is present in our everyday lives! I plan on showing students pictures, charts, and reading the description to help solve the math problem. Yummy Math posts something new everyday so we will have lots of options to choose from!

Yummy Math's website is found here.

BrainNook

BrainNook is an interactive site that we will be using this year! I find this site to be very neat because it has games that are aligned to the Common Core standards. BrainNook presents students with questions based on their skill levels which is determined by a quick pre-assessment and adjusted as they progress through BrainNook's virtual worlds. There are games that also align to the Language Arts standards but for the purpose of our class, we will use the ones for mathematics. (Parents/Guardians: You may also create an account for your children if you wish to practice Language Arts skills at home but it is not free.)

In our classroom, BrainNook will be used during our Computer center. As I set assignments (or open up games that align to the standard we are covering), students will be able to go in and play the game. Note: I plan on playing the game FIRST to ensure that it is appropriate and does cover the correct standard. The assignments will have a due date but because all students will have a chance at the computer center, this should not be a problem. BrainNook will also alert a parent/guardian through the e-mail entered when registering for site that a new misson (or game) has been assigned.
